My Story

Hola!
My name is Susan Rome‑Turpin.

I’ve been speaking Spanish for more than 45 years, a journey that began in my hometown of Los Angeles, California, where I grew up surrounded by a rich and vibrant Mexican‑American culture. In my early twenties, while working as a fashion designer in L.A., I realized how essential it was to truly master the Spanish language. I asked for a three‑month leave of absence and enrolled in an intensive language institute in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico.

Those three months changed everything. I lived with a Mexican family who spoke no English, studied Spanish four to six hours a day, taught English at night, and immersed myself completely in the language and culture. A local artisan and screen printer approached me with a creative opportunity, and those “three months” magically became four unforgettable years. Together we founded Rojas y Rome, a unique fashion line that supplied small resort boutiques throughout Mexico.

My love for the Spanish language and the Mexican people has shaped my life in ways I never could have imagined. It opened doors to experiences most people only dream about and gave me a deep appreciation for the warmth, artistry, and generosity of Mexican culture.

Today I teach Spanish to seniors, and some of my more adventurous students have encouraged me to take them to Mexico… and beyond. I’m thrilled to begin this new chapter.
